RoomJack is five, and excited about his birthday. He lives with his Ma in Room, which has a locked door and a skylight, and measures eleven feet by eleven feet. He loves watching TV, and the cartoon characters he calls friends, but he knows that nothing he sees on screen is truly real - only him, Ma and the things in Room. Until the day Ma admits that there's a world outside...

Told in Jack's voice, Room is the story of a mother and son whose love lets them survive the impossible. Unsentimental and sometimes funny, devastating yet uplifting, Room is a novel like no other.

Fifty Shades of... You can't be serious...

Yes, I read it.

No, I did not like it.

I could write fifty paragraphs about what was wrong with it, but let me summarize in just one word.

Now I need to clean my brain out with sunshine, and ponies, and ... hell, even Playboy would be better.

So Many Books...

Do you know what it's like to slip seamlessly from one book into another? It's almost like diving into a shallow pool, where you quickly touch the bottom, and then resurface, only to try again in a different spot - see perhaps if things are deeper over there...

Which, I guess, is my way of saying that I haven't really read anything that has truly affected me of late. Sure, I've read a LOT - and many of them were great books - but none of them grabbed my heartstrings and brain cells, forcing them to say "Wow! You really need to share this one with everybody you know!"

Still, in keeping with the true reason for this journal - which is more or less for my own purposes than anything else - here are some of my recent reads.

Thanks to for the awesome little widget!
